FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that you want to switch electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider has to give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor continues to supply electricity to your house after you switch to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your electricity supply won't be interrupted because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often within 24 hours. However, the actual switchover can't go ahead until your present provider has issued your final bill, and they can't do that until after the next time they read your meter. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will inform your current provider that you're changing providers. The actual transfer to your new provider will not happen immediately, though, because the old provider needs to do a final meter reading. and then send you their final bill. Your new provider only begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. However, we will receive a commission from your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips to lower your electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented tips to reduce household expenditure on electricity

  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear warm clothing (beanie, warm socks, jumper, booties).
  • Avoid usage of the clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or out through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening the windows during the night to allow the cool air in, and then shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Minimise lighting. Use natural light more often, and replace older lights with LED lights.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms where the sun shines in.
