Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in SA

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first stage was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater level of competition the energy market was divided into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. Every state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The market in South Australia was completely deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This meant that, for the first time, consumers could switch to a provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.

There is only one main electricity distributor in SA

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity in South Australia
  • Note, some remote areas of SA are supplied by other companies.

Tips to reduce electricity consumption to save money

Here are some easily implemented ways to reduce household expenditure on electricity

  • Turn your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Avoid using your clothes dryer. Hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (booties, warm socks, beanie, jumper).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or out via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to let the cool air in, then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Stop the sun over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Minimise lighting. Use natural lighting where possible.
  • Close doors to rooms that you aren't using, so you just cool or heat a smaller space.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider provides you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you that have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor will continue to supply electricity to your house if you switch over to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be certain that your electricity supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in under 24 hours. But the switchover won't take place until your current provider has sent you your final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll also notify your present provider that you're switching away from them. The actual switch to the new provider will not happen immediately, because your current provider needs to read your meter again, one final time. then send you their final bill. Your new provider begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. Instead, we will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
