FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have decided to switch electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider provides you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to cancel the process and remain with your old energy provider.
No, definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). That distributor will continue to supply the electricity to your house even after you switch over to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy at wholesale prices from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, your electricity supply won't be interrupted because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. But the final switchover will not go ahead until your current provider has issued you your final bill, and they can't do that until after the next time they read your meter. So, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will notify your present provider that you are switching away from them. The actual change to your new provider won't happen immediately, because your current provider will need to do a meter reading one final time. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. However, we will receive a commission from the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips to lower your electricity consumption to save money

Here is a list of easy to implement ways to reduce household expenditure on electricity

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Avoid usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, dry your clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent hot or cold air getting in or getting out through the gaps under doors or around your windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, dress for cold weather (warm socks, jumper, beanie, booties).
  • Use less lighting. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace older lighting with LED lights.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening let the house cool down, then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
  • Close the doors to rooms that you aren't using, so that you just heat or cool a smaller space.
