Electricity Market Competition in Qld

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first stage involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in a different state.

The next stage, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to promote greater competition the energy market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors look after the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. Every state has from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

The electricity market in South East Queensland was fully deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This allowed consumers to change to a provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

There are two electricity distributors in Queensland

  • Energex
Energex distributes electricity to an area covering about 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the NSW border in the south to Gympie in the north. This includes the major population areas of Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
The Ergon Energy network services rural and coastal areas of Queensland as well as the remote communities of outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips for using less energy to save money

Here are a few easy to implement tips for reducing your expenditure on energy

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, put on warmer clothing (warm socks, booties, jumper, beanie).
  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn off appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Minimise usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Minimise lighting by using natural light where possible.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the house cool down, and shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so that you only heat or cool a smaller space.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and decided that you want to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new energy provider will give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and stay with your old energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply the energy to your house even when you change to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from the distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your energy supply because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. But the final switchover cannot happen until after your current provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we notify your present provider that you're changing providers. The actual change in providers will not happen immediately, though, because your current provider will need to read your meter one final time. and then issue you their final bill. The new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that supplies the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from the new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
