Electricity Market Competition in NSW

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a deregulation since the late 1990s. The first stage was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next stage, which happened earlier in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote better competition the energy market was divided into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors look after the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. Every state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

NSW 's electricity market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This meant that, for the first time, consumers could switch to whichever provider offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is provided by three distributors

  • Endeavour Energy
The Endeavour Energy network supplies 2.4 million people with electricity in households and businesses throughout the Blue Mountains, Sydney's Greater West and the Southern Highlands.
  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid's network provides electricity to northern, eastern and inner metropolitan Sydney and north to the Hunter region and Newcastle.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity country and regional NSW, and also in southern regional QLD.

Tips to reduce energy consumption to save money

Here are some easily implemented ways to reduce your usage of energy

  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Avoid using your clothes dryer. Instead, dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather (warm socks, beanie, jumper, booties).
  • Minimise lighting. Use natural lighting where possible.
  • Close doors to rooms that you aren't using, so that you only cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening the windows during the night to allow the house cool down, then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and have made the decision that you want to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new energy provider provides you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days to change your mind and go back to your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply the energy to your house if you switch over to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they buy the energy at wholesale rates from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from a distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be certain that there won't be any interruption to your energy supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in less than 24 hours. However, the actual switchover won't take place until your current provider has sent you a final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we also notify your present provider that you're switching away from them. The actual changeover to the new provider will not happen immediately, because your current provider will need to do a final meter reading. then issue you their final bill. Your new provider begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your home continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will receive a commission from the new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
