Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in NSW

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process which began in the late 1990s. The first step involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in another state.

The next stage, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote greater competition the market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors look after the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. Each state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The electricity market in NSW was fully deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This allowed customers to switch to a provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by three distributors

  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy supplies 2.4 million people with electricity in homes and businesses across Sydney's Greater West, the Blue Mountains, and Southern Highlands.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity country and regional NSW, and in southern regional QLD.
  • Ausgrid
The Ausgrid network provides electricity to inner, northern and eastern metropolitan Sydney and north to Newcastle and the Hunter region.

Save money with these electricity -saving tips

Here are some easy to implement tips to reduce how much electricity you use

  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Turn off appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for the weather (warm socks, booties, jumper, beanie).
  • Reduce use of the clothes dryer. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Use less lighting. Rely on natural light if possible.
  • Reduce air conditioning use by opening windows at night to let the house cool down, and closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Close the doors to rooms that you don't use, so that you only heat or cool a smaller space.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and decided that you want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new electricity provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and stay with your old energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor will continue to supply the electricity to your house even if you switch to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from the distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, usually within 24 hours. But the actual switchover cannot take place until your current provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we notify your current provider that you are switching away from them. The actual change in providers won't happen immediately, because the old provider will need to read your meter one final time. and then issue you a final bill. Your new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your premises will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
