Electricity Market Deregulation in Qld

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a process of deregulation ever since the late 1990s. The first step was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.

The next stage, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote a greater amount of competition the market was separated into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors manage the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Each state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The South East Queensland market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This meant that customers could switch to the provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Two electricity distributors supply all of Queensland

  • Energex
Energex distributes electricity to premises in an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the border of NSW in the south to Gympie in the north. This includes Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
Ergon Energy supplies electricity to Queensland including coastal and rural areas as well as the remote communities of outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips to lower energy consumption and lower your bills

Here are a few easily implemented tips to reduce your expenditure on energy

  • Turn off your appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear warmer clothing (warm socks, jumper, booties, beanie).
  • Avoid use of the clothes dryer. Instead, dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Use less lighting. Use natural light more often. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so you just heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening windows at night to allow the house cool down, and then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and decided that you'd like to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new energy provider has to give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and stay with your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor continues to supply the energy to your house when you switch to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from the distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, your energy supply will not be interrupted because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, often in under 24 hours. But the switchover can't happen until your current provider has issued you their final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll notify your current provider that you're moving to another provider. The actual changeover in providers won't happen immediately, though, because the old provider will need to do a meter reading again, one final time. then send you their final bill. Your new provider only starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that feeds the energy to your premises will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from the new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
