Electricity Market Deregulation in NSW

Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation ever since the late 1990s. The first stage was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in other states.

Another stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the breaking up of the state owned monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate better competition the energy market was separated into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors have the responsibility for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2014 , NSW 's electricity market was completely deregulated. This meant that consumers could change to another provider that had cheaper prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following distributors

  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy supplies electricity to 2.4 million people in homes and businesses in the Southern Highlands, Sydney's Greater West and the Blue Mountains.
  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid supplies energy throughout eastern, inner and northern metropolitan Sydney and in Newcastle and the Hunter region.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy supplies electricity country and regional NSW, and also throughout southern regional QLD.

Tips to reduce your electricity usage and lower your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented tips for reducing household expenditure on electricity

  • Use the clothes dryer less. Dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (beanie, jumper, booties, warm socks).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Close the doors to rooms that aren't in use, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Minimise lighting by making use of the available natural light and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lighting.
  • Reduce air conditioning use by opening your windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, and then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you have made the decision to change electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider has to give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means that you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply electricity to your premises after you change to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be sure that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in less than 24 hours. But the actual switchover can't go ahead until after your old provider has sent your final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will also tell the current provider that you are switching away from them. The transfer to the new provider will not happen immediately, because the current provider will have to do a final meter reading. then issue you their final bill. The new provider only begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your house will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
