Electricity Market Deregulation in Qld

The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a deregulation process ever since the late 1990s. The first stage was the establishing of a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in different states.

The next step, which happened sooner in some states, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to produce a greater degree of competition the energy market was divided into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
    Distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the powerlines and poles, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. Every state has between one and three distributors, and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2016 , the South East Queensland electricity market was fully deregulated. This meant that, for the first time, consumers could change to a provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

There are only two distributors supplying electricity to Queensland

  • Energex
    Energex supplies electricity to homes and businesses in an area covering about 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, stretching from the border of NSW to Gympie in the north. This covers Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
    The Ergon Energy network distributes electricity to coastal and rural areas of Queensland as well as the remote communities of outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips to reduce electricity usage to save on your bills

Here are some easily implemented ways for reducing your expenditure on electricity

  • Don't use your clothes dryer as frequently. Instead, dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Dress for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (jumper, beanie, warm socks, booties).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent hot or cold air entering or escaping via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that aren't in use, so that you just heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening let the cooler air in, then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Minimise lighting through the use of as much natural light as possible.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and you have made the decision to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new electricity provider provides you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to cancel the process and remain with your old energy provider.
No. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). That distributor will continue to supply the electricity to your premises if you change over to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from the distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually within 24 hours. However, the switchover won't take place until after your present provider has sent your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It could take as long as three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we will also inform the current provider that you're moving to another provider. The change to the new provider will not happen immediately, though, because the current provider has to do a meter reading one final time. and then issue you a final bill. The new provider begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor that supplies the energy to your house continues to be the same one as before the switch.
